In the midst of an ambitious construction program, Rice University is not just increasing the number of buildings on campus. While preparing for its second century with the construction of two residential colleges, a community pavilion, a utility plant, a collaborative research center, a new recreation center and other projects, the university is also adding to its population of 4,000 trees. The whole campus is, in fact, an arboretum. Some of its most treasured trees are being relocated to better spots; others are being temporarily cared for at a tree nursery until they can be repatriated. Rice is planting more trees with each new building project, replacing those in declining health and diversifying the variety in the campus canopy. As Shakespeare said, “These trees shall be my books.”
