Who knew that a Rice education could make you go to the dogs?

idiatrodMeet Rice University alumna Liz Parrish — innkeeper, musher, methodical record keeper and dogsbody to a much-loved pack of athletes who happen to be canine. This former Silicon Valley executive is planning to put her unique skill set to the test in the "Last Great Race on Earth" — the 2008 Iditarod distance mushing competition. And while the electrical engineering degree she earned at Rice may not directly relate to her current occupation, she said it still benefits her today. "Rice taught me to think and problem-solve," Parrish said. "I'm not doing programming or differential equations, but I do need to be creative, motivated and dedicated to work with my dogs." That's a tail-wagging formula for success.
