Who knew Rice Owls could perch in Waco?

TrophySports greats and former Owls Lance Berkman and Tommy Kramer haven’t flown far from the nest since they left Rice University and moved into their professional sports careers. They’ll join another premier flock in February 2010 when they are inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. There, they’ll be part of an all-star lineup that includes the likes of football quarterback Troy Aikman, baseball pitcher Nolan Ryan, gymnast and Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton, and nearly 300 other Texas sports greats — including Rice’s legendary baseball coach, Wayne Graham. Before Berkman slugged his 1,500 hits, 1,000 RBIs and 300 homeruns for the Houston Astros, he led the Owls to their first-ever appearance in the College World Series. Kramer earned All-America and All-Southwest Conference honors as the Owls' quarterback and was a first-round NFL draft pick for the Minnesota Vikings, where he passed for more than 24,000 yards, with 159 touchdowns. Berkman and Kramer are the 17th and 18th Owls to earn induction into the Hall of Fame. At Rice, student–athletes score big on the field, in the classroom and in life.
