It wasn’t just a day at the beach for the Rice University Facilities, Engineering and Planning team that scooped, sculpted and packed sand to win the “Most Complex” award for their sandcastle creation, “Save Our Oceans.” The group, along with 30 other Rice volunteers, was among more than 70 teams to compete in the 23rd annual American Institute of Architects Sandcastle Competition in Galveston, Texas, on June 6. To make this year’s event more “green,” competitors were not allowed to use gasoline- or diesel-powered generators to pump the seawater needed to moisten sand for the castle construction. So team organizer Marty Zawacki devised a green-friendly way to supply water to the site by removing the tire on a bicycle and attaching a human-powered pump. Team members all took turns pedaling to keep a steady flow of water to the castle This was the 12th year in a row a Rice team has entered the competition, and proud members say they hope to buck the tide by winning again next year.
