This season, freshman Anthony Rendon, third baseman for the Rice University baseball team, just kept the ball flying higher and higher. Named an All-American by Collegiate Baseball, Rendon didn’t leave a base untouched as he set league records in home runs and slugging percentages and topped the team with the best batting and RBI average. After being named league Player of the Year, Rendon hit the sweet spot again when he earned the 2009 Louisville Slugger National Freshman of the Year award, which made him the first Conference USA player in history to receive both honors. To top an already sensational debut, Rendon was named a second team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association. Did we mention he was drafted to play in the pros right out of high school, but chose Rice because, he said, “I wanted to get my education first.” Owl fans can’t wait to see his sophomore year score.
