Just in time for spring cleaning, Rice University students are taking out the garbage — well, some of it. Used paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, glass containers and plastic bottles are getting a second chance at life as part of Rice’s participation in RecycleMania, a friendly competition among colleges and universities in the U.S. that provides a fun approach to waste reduction. Campuses compete to see who can achieve the highest recycling rate and collect the most recyclables per capita, the most total recyclables and the least trash per capita. Rice is making it easier for students to participate by placing specially marked receptacles around campus and by providing desk-side paper recycling bins. So will Rice be the RecycleMania leader? Only if students, staff and faculty members walk the trash talk.
