Have planetarium, will travel. Thanks to Rice University and the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS), that scenario isn’t just plausible — it’s happening every day. Rice and HMNS have developed the Discovery Dome® portable planetarium to be so compact that it can be carried in a small car or checked as airline luggage. The igloo-shaped dome inflates using a common carpet dryer, and a clever convex mirror fills the dome with stars or moving imagery. Shows in the dome teach about the earth, space and the human body, and they’re now playing in 13 countries and four languages. That’s a blockbuster!
