When it comes to Monty Python, anything goes. Take a quote from “The Meaning of Life”: The soul, says one of the characters, “has to be brought into existence by a process of guided self-observation.” So it’s no surprise that one of the comedy troupe’s driving forces, John Cleese, will appear in an upcoming documentary about America’s experiential spiritual mecca: Esalen. The film — based on Rice religion Professor Jeffrey Kripal’s critically acclaimed book, “Esalen: America and the Religion of No Religion” — is the work of husband-and-wife filmmaking team Jerome Gary and Mary Lambert. If their names aren’t familiar, their films certainly are — most notably the documentary that rocketed Arnold Schwarzenegger to stardom, “Pumping Iron,” and all of Madonna’s early music videos. Now they’re combining Kripal’s research with their filmmaking talents to create a documentary that promises to be the full monty. Ni!
