Who knew you could fit the cosmos into a cabinet?

Mambo JamboWalk through Charlie Roberts’ exhibition at Rice Gallery, and you’ll find a deft, sometimes humorous retelling of human history. “MAMBO JAMBO: Cabinet of the Cosmos” juxtaposes the animal world with the human, filling opposing walls with primeval watercolors of men and women — both ancient and modern — and their anthropomorphic counterparts. These walls compose the side panels of this modern cabinet of curiosities, framing what looks like an upright tic-tac-toe board. In the pivotal center box, a human head emerges from between a woman’s legs, representing Mother Nature’s birthing of the cosmos. “We don’t know why it goes on,” said Roberts, “but it goes on. There’s a tendency to think that our time or ourselves are exceptional, but we’re just specks in the grander push.” “MAMBO JAMBO” will be on view at the Rice Gallery through March 30, 2008.
