Rice is housed in the fourth-largest city in the U.S., but that cosmopolitan setting doesn’t dampen the agrarian instincts of its students. Three Rice students, working as interns with the Lesotho Sustainability Assessment Project, built a “keyhole garden” in Houston’s Fifth Ward in preparation for a summer trip to the southern African nation. Cosponsored by the Baker Institute Energy Forum and Rice 360°, the project is developing cost-effective projects to help developing countries find economically and environmentally sustainable ways to grow and thrive. By gaining some hands-on experience stateside, the students are now ready to head overseas and watch their gardens grow.
