Who knew a thousand students could make Rice grand?

International WallThe folks in Rice’s Office of International Students and Scholars are doing a grand job — literally. This year, the number of international students at Rice University passed the 1,000-student benchmark for the first time in university history and reached a total of 1,051. That means international students account for nearly 19 percent of Rice’s student population — a staggering figure when you consider that, according to the Open Doors 2008 Report on International Educational Exchange, international students at the five U.S. universities with the highest foreign enrollment in 2007–08 averaged about 18 percent of the total student population. But international students don’t just add dynamic diversity to Rice in the grand scheme of things — the group itself is incredibly diverse. Its members hail from 88 countries and all six habitable continents, study in every academic school, and include undergrads, grads, athletes and students in professional programs. No matter how you analyze it, those are some pretty grand statistics.
