Weathering a major storm requires courage, planning and ample food and water supplies. Luckily for Rice University students and employees, there was plenty to go around. Thousands of students, faculty and staff members lost power as Hurricane Ike pummeled the U.S.’s fourth-largest metropolis, and Rice came to the rescue with free ice, hot meals, short-term loans, laundry services and more. All students, even those living off campus, were able to shelter safely in their residential colleges, which had power throughout the storm that left much of the city in the dark. Rice also lent a helping hand to the wider Houston community by hosting a medical triage unit, providing a temporary landing pad for medical evacuation helicopters bringing patients to the Texas Medical Center, and organizing volunteer cleanup and other assistance. It was chicken (and Rice!) soup for the soul of a worn and weary community.
