Who knew hurricane recovery was a team sport?

Lending a handThey may be better known around Rice as football and basketball players, but several Owls scored big recently when they assisted with Hurricane Ike recovery efforts on campus and beyond. When the motor that ran Rice’s water well burned out during the storm, former Rice football players John Huff ’69 and Jay Collins ’68 of Houston-based Oceaneering International Inc. helped orchestrate the location and transfer of a 2,500-pound motor assembly — all the way from Tennessee. Members of the Rice basketball team also delivered an assist, this time in Bayou Vista, Texas, where they moved mountains of debris — damaged refrigerators, roofs and walls — and even dodged a couple of snakes as they helped cleanup the Galveston County town. It was just one more example of what happens when you combine the strength of an athlete with the heart of a Rice champion.
