With the same determination that fuels its fight against diseases like cancer and AIDS, Rice University has taken on the virus H1N1, also known as swine flu. In an attempt to prepare the campus community for a possible outbreak of the illness and to prevent as many cases of influenza as possible, Rice has disseminated informational flyers and e-mails regarding the best ways for individuals to protect themselves and others from contracting the disease. Turns out, one of the best ways to stay healthy is also one of the easiest: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You can also clean your hands using the alcohol-based product found in the 120 hand sanitizers Rice has installed in various buildings throughout campus. With a little common sense — and a little soap or hand sanitizer — we’ll get the upper hand on H1N1 yet.
