Who knew good eats could make you green?

Farmers MarketWalk through the Rice Stadium parking lot during a home game, and you’ll experience bright lights, a cheering crowd and the wafting smell of popcorn. Walk through the same parking lot on a Tuesday afternoon, and you’ll have a completely different sensory experience. Small open-air tents line a makeshift Main Street, offering the tasty sights and smells of locally produced food and goods under the banner of the Houston Farmers Market. Rice University hosts the market every week, but that’s not the only green initiative on campus: There are free bicycles for residents of Rice’s graduate apartments, LEED-certified new buildings and rain-permeable sidewalks that moisten tree roots. Why, the campus itself is an arboretum! When it comes to green, the Rice blue and gray are proud to let the grass grow under their feet.
