Mark Brice knows the salty life of a sailor in the Iraq War — he experienced it every day for six months through the lens of his camera. As one of 17 filmmakers responsible for the 10-hour PBS documentary, “Carrier,” the cinematographer and Rice alum helped document the journey of 5,000 Navy soldiers and Marines deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz as it traveled the Pacific Ocean in 2005. It took the film crew nearly three years to edit the 1,600 hours of footage they captured while on board, but all the hard work paid off: On Sept. 19, Brice and the film’s four other cinematographers walked down the red carpet with Emmys for Outstanding Cinematography for Reality Programming — beating out popular shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race. It was the perfect finishing touch to a salt-of-the-earth experience that’s sure to leave Brice thirsty for more.
