Research
Houston is a rich urban laboratory for research and curiosity-driven investigation. Its demographic mix, economic landscape, infrastructure and climate combine to give it a distinctive set of challenges and opportunities.
At Rice, research is so much more than test tubes or sterile laboratories. Here, world-renowned experts delve into issues that hit close to home—but have global impact as well. Their research is driven by the quest for knowledge and understanding, but it’s also fueled by the desire to make the world and our community better places.
With tremendous energy and determination, researchers at Rice ask the difficult questions—and find the answers that make a difference. Nurtured and supported by Rice’s community of scholars, they share a common goal—to give the next generation a better world.
Houston—and the world—can rest a little easier because they’re here.
“Our ability to serve and learn from Houston extends well beyond the offering of formal educational programs. Our city must form an integral part of the educational opportunity we offer to our students. A portion of our research endeavors must focus on the problems of Houston, from its educational challenges to its environmental problems, and we must play a part in solving those problems.”

K–12 Education
Inside every classroom, the leaders of tomorrow look to their teachers for education, insight and guidance. With enormous dedication, teachers hold the future in their hands, but they also face numerous challenges.
Years ago, Rice realized that one of the biggest opportunities to make a difference is through reaching out to serve the educational needs of the larger community. In fact, it’s so important that it’s written into the university’s strategic plan.
One of the most effective ways to have an impact on the largest number of students is through teacher training. By giving teachers the tools they need to succeed, Rice is able to touch thousands of lives.
And it is a two-way street as well. Every Rice student and faculty and staff member who participates in teacher training is enriched by their involvement.
At Rice, we believe knowledge and learning know no boundaries.
“As a matter of educational philosophy, civic responsibility and competitive advantage, Rice ought to be fully engaged with the city of Houston and capitalize on all that it has to offer. This is a project of engagement that begins with our academic mission. We have created numerous relationships with Houston that inform the scholarly work of our faculty and the intellectual conversations on our campus.”
