Who knew day-glo green could get a campus wired?

What do you get when you combine electric-green paint, tilt-up concrete panels and lots of computer space? If you’re Rice University’s new Data Center, you get a 2008 Design Award from the American Institute of Architects in Houston (AIA). You also help your university collect an award for innovative technology from Campus Technology magazine and make The Princeton Review and PC Magazine list of the nation’s top 20 wired colleges.

The 20,000-square-foot Data Center is the pinnacle of savvy design, with a scaleable infrastructure that holds the university’s computing systems while increasing its capacity for advanced research computers. Designed by Carlos Jimenez Studio and PGAL, the facility garnered high praise from AIA jurors, who called its bright-green exterior “a clever way to animate what seems to be a low-budget building.” It’s all part of the three-year, $22 million network overhaul that led The Princeton Review, PC Magazine and Campus Technology to praise Rice for its high-performance, flexible IT infrastructure. That’s enough to leave other data warehouses green with envy.
