Who knew that a small research university would become the destination of choice for the world’s largest country?

Welcome to ChinaAt about 8,000, the population of Rice is 1/165,000th that of China’s — but the small university’s big reputation for premier research and undergraduate education caught the attention of the country that 1.3 billion people call home. Last year more than 20 Chinese universities sent presidents and other senior administrators to Rice to learn about the workings of American higher education. In addition to meeting with Rice faculty and administrators, the delegation sampled several of Houston’s cultural, governmental and entertainment offerings — including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and a performance by rockers ZZ Top. They returned home at the end of two weeks, thoroughly convinced that Rice’s larger-than-life international reputation is hugely deserved.
