Who knew a school known for brains could also be known for brawn?

lifting weightsRice University students are already adept in the academic gymnastics of the mind and soon they’ll have a new place to master the athletic equations of the body. Scheduled to open in September 2009, the Rice Recreation and Wellness Center will offer state-of-the-art workout and health facilities and will house everything from competitive swimming and billiards to nutritional counseling and meditative classroom space. “We know that a healthy mind and a healthy body go hand in hand,” said President David Leebron. “Rice students have always studied hard, and now they will have a wonderful new facility where they can play just as hard.” Rice broke ground in April for the two-story, 103,000-square-foot building, which will also serve as the new home of the Rice Wellness Center. The project’s $41 million price tag was funded through a lead gift by David ’71 and Barbara Gibbs ’71 and through the generosity of Carl Isgren ’61 and trustee emeritus Ralph O’Connor. Let’s face it: Staying fit is the smart thing to do.
