Some people work better under pressure. As it turns out, Rice University bioengineers are among them — and that’s good news for arthritis sufferers. While arthritis often forms around injured cartilage, which cannot heal itself, a team of Rice scientists recently discovered that intense pressure causes cartilage cells to grow new tissue with nearly all the properties of natural cartilage. This engineered tissue could be transplanted into adults to repair damaged joints before arthritis can develop — and the technique may also facilitate repairs to bladders, heart valves, bones and more. Now that’s a high-pressure tactic that works!
